Why A&P textbooks cost so much — and why the anatomy hasn’t changed

Anatomy and physiology textbooks are among the most expensive in any health sciences program, and pre-nursing and pre-med students are required to take A&P before advancing to clinical coursework. Marieb’s Human Anatomy & Physiology (now in its 12th edition), Tortora & Derrickson’s Principles of Anatomy and Physiology (16th edition), and Saladin’s Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function all retail for $270–$350 new.

Cheap A&P textbooks on Pristine Text are less expensive for one reason: they’ve been owned before. The femur has the same anatomy in Marieb 10th edition as in the 12th. Action potentials, cardiac cycles, and nephron physiology are unchanged. New editions primarily update clinical application boxes and medical imaging examples — not the core anatomical and physiological content you’re responsible for knowing.

A&P textbooks are large-format, full-color, and heavy — which is why our warehouse grades binding condition explicitly. A copy listed as Very Good will have an intact spine and clean full-color figures, not a book where the pages separate from the binding after three months of lab use.

How to buy cheap A&P textbooks on Pristine Text

01

Confirm combined A&P vs. separate anatomy/physiology

Pre-nursing and pre-med programs differ. Some use a single combined A&P text (Marieb, Tortora, or Saladin) for two semesters. Others split into a dedicated anatomy course and a separate physiology course with different textbooks. Your syllabus specifies which.

02

Search by ISBN — A&P has many edition variants

Marieb alone has 11+ editions, a brief edition, and multiple lab manual versions. The 13-digit ISBN is the only reliable identifier for the exact book your course requires. Paste it directly into the search bar.

03

Order ships from our warehouse

A&P texts are among the largest and heaviest in our catalog. We pack them specifically to protect spines and corners during shipping, and include a tracking number the day your order ships.

04

7-day return guarantee

If condition doesn't match what was listed, return it free. Full refund. Pre-nursing students especially can't afford condition surprises — our grading is accurate and our return policy backs it up.

Common questions about cheap anatomy & physiology textbooks

Do you carry Marieb Human Anatomy & Physiology and Tortora Principles of A&P?+−

Yes — both are regularly stocked across multiple editions. We also carry Saladin. Search by the 13-digit ISBN from your syllabus.

Can I use an older edition of an A&P textbook?+−

For anatomy content, yes — bones and muscles haven't changed. For nursing programs with minimum edition requirements, confirm with your instructor. One edition back is usually fine; two may miss updated clinical terminology.

What is the cheapest A&P textbook option?+−

Buy one edition back in Good or Very Good condition here. Marieb retails $280–$350 new; one edition back typically runs $50–$100. The anatomical content is identical.

Do secondhand A&P books include Mastering A&P access?+−

No. Mastering A&P codes are single-use. Buy standalone access from Pearson and the physical book here. Combined cost is usually far less than a new bundle.

Do you carry A&P lab manuals?+−

Yes. Lab manuals are stocked separately — search by ISBN to confirm you have the correct version (cat vs. fetal pig, etc.) for your lab section.
