Condition & grading
What do the condition grades mean?+−
Every book we sell is inspected by hand and assigned one of five grades. Pristine is unused and never opened. Like New shows minimal handling with no markings. Great has light wear but clean pages. Good may have some highlighting or notes but is fully readable. Fair is heavily annotated but completely intact. You can see the full breakdown on our condition guide page.
Is it worth buying a book in Good or Fair condition?+−
For most courses, yes. Good and Fair copies contain every word of the original text. If you're using the book to study from and don't mind previous highlighting — which many students find helpful — they offer significant savings over Pristine or Like New copies. We grade conservatively, so a Good copy is genuinely readable.
Can I see photos of the actual book before buying?+−
Yes. Many listings include condition photos uploaded by our team showing the actual copy — spine, pages, cover, and any notable markings. Look for the photos section on the listing page beneath each condition option.
How do you decide what condition grade to assign?+−
Each book is physically inspected before listing. We check the spine for creasing, pages for tears or water damage, and the interior for writing, highlighting, and missing pages. We intentionally grade conservatively — we'd rather a book arrive in better condition than expected, never worse.
Will highlighting in a Fair or Good book make it hard to study?+−
It depends on how you learn. Some students find existing highlights useful as a study guide. Others find them distracting. If you prefer clean pages, choose Pristine, Like New, or Great. If you're comfortable with annotations, Good and Fair offer the same content at a lower price.
Editions & course use
Do I need the exact edition listed on my course syllabus?+−
Not always. For most foundational textbooks — programming, calculus, biology, chemistry — the content between adjacent editions is 85–95% identical. Page numbers and end-of-chapter problems differ, so if your professor assigns specific problem sets by page number, the exact edition matters. If the syllabus just lists the book title, an edition behind is usually fine. When in doubt, check with your professor before ordering.
How do I find out which edition I need?+−
Check your course syllabus — the edition is usually listed next to the title and ISBN. You can also search by ISBN directly on our browse page to find the exact copy your course requires. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help you identify the right edition from your course code or syllabus.
Why are older editions so much cheaper?+−
Publishers release new editions on a regular cycle, often with minor updates. The previous edition loses demand even though the content is largely unchanged, so prices drop significantly. This is one of the best ways to save on textbooks — an edition or two behind is usually equivalent for learning purposes.
Do you sell international editions?+−
We stock primarily North American editions. International editions of the same textbook are printed for overseas markets and are often identical in content but may differ in cover, paper quality, or problem numbering. If you need a specific international ISBN, contact us and we'll check our inventory.
Ordering & payment
Do I need an account to buy?+−
No. You can check out as a guest using just your email address. Creating an account lets you track orders, manage returns, save listings to your wishlist, and re-use your saved shipping address at future checkouts. Sign-up takes under a minute.
What payment methods do you accept?+−
We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover). All payments are processed securely through Stripe — your card details are never stored on our servers.
Can I order multiple copies of the same book?+−
Yes. Use the quantity selector on the listing page to add multiple copies. If you need a large number of copies for a class or program, contact us through our volume orders page — we can often accommodate bulk requests with better pricing.
Can I cancel or change my order after placing it?+−
Yes — if your order is still in Pending status (before payment is confirmed), you can cancel it yourself from your order history page. Once payment is confirmed and the order moves to Confirmed status, self-service cancellation is no longer available; contact us at support@pristinetext.com and we will do our best to help. Once an order has shipped we cannot cancel it, but you can start a return within 7 days of delivery.
Shipping & delivery
Do you offer free shipping on textbooks?+−
Yes. Orders of $150 or more automatically qualify for free Extended or Standard Delivery. Expedited Delivery is free on orders of $200 or more. No coupon code needed — the discount is applied at checkout. Stack your semester books into one order to take advantage of free textbook shipping.
How long does shipping take?+−
It depends on the shipping method you choose at checkout. Extended Delivery takes 8–16 business days in total (including 1–2 business days of handling). Standard Delivery takes 5–10 business days. Expedited Delivery takes 3–6 business days. You will receive a tracking number by email as soon as your order leaves the warehouse.
What shipping methods do you offer?+−
We offer three options. Extended Delivery is $4.99 flat regardless of book count (free on orders $150+), powered by USPS Media Mail. Standard Delivery starts at $5.99 for the first book, +$3.00 for the second, and +$1.50 for each additional book (free on orders $150+). Expedited Delivery starts at $12.99 for the first book, +$5.99 for the second, and +$2.99 for each additional book (free on orders $200+). All options include USPS tracking.
What is USPS Media Mail?+−
USPS Media Mail is a special low-cost USPS shipping rate available exclusively for books, textbooks, and educational materials. It is the most affordable book shipping option in the United States. Media Mail packages are tracked and typically arrive within 2–8 business days in transit.
How do I track my order?+−
Every order ships with USPS tracking. You will receive a tracking number by email as soon as your package leaves our warehouse. You can also view your full order status — placed, shipped, delivered — from your account page at any time.
Do you ship outside the United States?+−
We currently ship within the United States only. We do not offer international shipping at this time.
What if my book arrives damaged in transit?+−
If your book is damaged during shipping, contact us or start a return within 7 days of delivery. Select "Item damaged in shipping" as the reason, attach a photo, and we will process a full refund. You do not need to ship the book back when damage was caused by the carrier.
Returns & refunds
What is your return policy?+−
You can return any book within 7 days of delivery. The condition must match what we described, the book must be complete (no removed pages), and you'll need to provide at least one photo of the item. Refunds are issued to your original payment method.
How do I start a return?+−
Go to the Returns page, enter your order reference number and the email address you used when ordering. You'll see your eligible items and can select which ones to return. No account login required — guest returns are supported.
What if the book condition doesn't match the listing?+−
This is our most important guarantee. If the condition you received doesn't match what was listed, contact us or start a return immediately. Select 'Condition not as described' as the reason. We take this seriously — our grading reputation depends on getting this right.
How long do refunds take?+−
Once your return is approved by our team (typically within 1–2 business days), your refund is issued to your original payment method via Stripe. Most refunds appear within 5–10 business days depending on your card issuer — some banks process faster, but plan for up to 10 days.
Can I return part of a multi-book order?+−
Yes. You can select individual items from an order when submitting a return request. You'll only be refunded for the items you return.
Volume & institutional orders
Can I order textbooks in bulk for a class or program?+−
Yes. We work with instructors, departments, and training programs who need multiple copies of the same title. Contact us through our volume orders page with the title, ISBN, edition, quantity, and your timeline and we'll get back to you with availability and pricing.
Do you offer discounts for large orders?+−
Volume pricing is available for orders of 10 or more copies of the same title. Reach out via the volume orders contact form and we'll work out pricing based on the quantity and condition needed.
